Simba overcome tricky JKT Tanzania to keep pace in title race
Clatous Chama continued his strong form on Wednesday, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory for Simba SC against JKT Tanzania to maintain their title push in the NBC Premier League.
The Zambian, who made headlines around the world with his spectacular strike in the Reds’ 2-2 draw against Young Africans in Sunday’s Kariakoo Derby, was at it again on Wednesday. Just like his overhead kick against Yanga, it was Congolese attacker Elie Mpanzu who provided the assist for a finish in the JKT Tanzania penalty area early in the second half.
The title race situation for Simba and Yanga
Simba remain five points back of defending champions Yanga, who also had to dig deep to overcome last place Kinondoni Municipal Council with a 1-0 victory away from home earlier on Wednesday. Nine rounds remain in what is shaping up to be a tense final third of the league campaign.
Another element of suspense occurred shortly after Yanga’s victory over KMC. The Citizens sacked head coach Pedro Gonçalves despite an undefeated record in league matches this season. Simba had defeated their rivals in the final of the Muungano Cup (Union Cup), a competition featuring top clubs from Tanzania and Zanzibar, on April 29.

For the Msimbazi Reds, they will attempt to maintain pressure on the league leaders during a period of uncertainty. Next up is another home match on Sunday against Tanzania Prisons. The Dar es Salaam giants have not lost a competitive match since January 24 in the CAF Champions League against Tunisia’s Espérance Tunis.
One for the road for Nairobi United as Hatikimana strike downs Tusker
NAIROBI, Kenya, May 6, 2026 – Nairobi United recovered from a disappointing weekend to beat Tusker 1-0 in a midweek FKF Premier League fixture at the Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Rwandese Mudjari Hakitimana was Naibois’ destroyer-in-chief, his goal in the 18th minute proving the difference in a tie that could have tipped either way.
Tusker came into the game buoyed by their 2-1 victory over Ulinzi Stars in the FKF Cup quarterfinal over the weekend, a result that keeps them on course for silverware in head coach Julien Mette’s debut season.
On the other hand, Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor’s charges were smarting from their 1-0 loss to KCB in the same competition, which dashed their hopes of defending a title they won against all odds in season past.
However, Hakitimana’s strike ensured they return to winning ways and crucially, continue their impeccable league run from April during which they won thrice and drew once.
The Johnson Sakaja-owned side now sit fourth on the log with 48 points, three less than third-placed Kenya Police who clobbered Murang’a Seal 2-1 at the Police Sacco Stadium – also on Wednesday evening.

Yanga fire coach Gonçalves shortly after league victory
In a somewhat surprising decision, Tanzanian champions Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga SC) have fired head coach Pedro Gonçalves. The decision was announced by the club shortly after Wednesday’s 1-0 NBC Premier League victory over last place Kinondoni Municipal Council.

The Portuguese coach took over in late October and had Young Africans at the top of the NBC Premier League table with an undefeated record from 21 matches at the time of his dismissal. Yanga currently lead rivals Simba SC by five points with nine rounds remaining in the league.
The two rivals squared off on Sunday in the Kariakoo Derby, where Young Africans came back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 and maintain their lead at the top of the table. On Wednesday, the league leaders encountered some resistance from last place KMC but an Allan Okello goal in the second half was enough to secure victory.
Recent results provide hint at reasons behind Yanga’s sudden decision
While the performances of the club were not at their highest level, the results remained strong over the course of the league campaign which makes Wednesday evening’s decision a bit of a surprise. Yanga also remain in contention to win Tanzania’s CRDB Bank Federation Cup, where they are also the defending champions.
But there were some signs of lackluster play in recent months, which culminated in a defeat in the final by their rivals in the Muungano Cup (Union Cup) during a break in league action.

In March, Yanga were held to draws on four occasions as well and Gonçalves did fail to defeat rivals Simba in three matches.
And the results against their rivals may provide a clue to the logic behind the sacking of Gonçalves. The Portuguese tactician also failed to advance the Tanzanian champions beyond the group stage of the CAF Champions League, where they came short in Group B which included Egyptian giants Al Ahly, current finalists AS FAR Rabat of Morocco and Algeria’s JS Kabylie.
Assistant coaches Abdihamid Moalin and Patrick Mabedi will take charge on an interim basis as announced by the club. Their next fixture is on Saturday at home against Coastal Union in the NBC Premier League.
Gonçalves previously enjoyed a successful six-year spell with the Angola national team, leading the Palancas Negras to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. By the time he departed in September 2025, he had set the record for most victories as coach of the national team.
